Many people today are in a constantly
hectic state of being; they try to get too much done in an inadequate amount of
time. This leads to people drinking energy drinks or coffee and trying to consume
as much caffeine as they can to help them stay awake as long as possible.
Consuming high levels of caffeine on a constant basis has
been shown to cause symptoms such as anxiety, jitteriness, headaches and
fatigue; as well as withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine toxicity can also occur if
you consume too much caffeine per your body weight. These symptoms include nervousness,
irritability, anxiety, insomnia, upset stomach, vomiting, abdominal pain, tremors,
tachycardia, heart palpitations, hallucinations, stroke, paralysis, seizures and
even death.
With these types of symptoms and consequences you would
think that people would be prone to staying away from such high levels of
caffeine. But most people today don’t even know how much they are actually
consuming on a daily basis. Most products don’t even say outright how much
caffeine is in them. There is even a new type of dietary supplement called “breathable
energy”. It’s pretty much caffeine in a fine powder that dissolves almost
instantaneously when breathed in. This is not to be confused with inhaling; you
are not supposed to inhale it, only breath in the powder so it can dissolve on
your tongue. These claims are very confusing and potentially dangerous. The
effects of inhaling caffeine directly into the lungs hasn’t been studied yet
and it could be unsafe.
So now we are not only consuming too much caffeine, but it’s
even easier to do so. One Aeroshot
contains about 100mg of caffeine, which is equal to one cup of coffee. If more than
one shot is taken in a day, which is likely because people already drink more
than one cup of coffee a day, then these caffeine shots could lead to caffeine
toxicity even quicker than before. Be aware of what you are bringing into your
body and if it is a healthy or normal dose; this could prevent future illnesses
or even death.
I loved your topic, it is so true; I myself am a coffee drinker as of recently and I catch myself going for the second or third cup sometimes without even realizing it. I never knew however that there was such a thing as inhalable caffeine. How does that actually work? Does it act faster? It makes me wonder what the side effects might be because anything like that being inhaled into the lungs I’m not too sure would be good for your body. You have given me a new thing to look into, I’d actually like to learn more about this inhalable caffeine; it’s just so interesting to me.
ReplyDeleteThe products in the supplement market never cease to amaze. As I write this I am consuming 6 shots of expresso and know that it is too much. I work/study seven days a week and so like to cheat sleep with excessive caffeine, but inhaling sounds dangerous even though I would try it. I admit I take NSAID in powder form just for the 30 mg of caffeine to ingest faster, while the many chews/tongue strips have about 15 mg in them. WOW, 100 mg per dose. I don't want to sound like a junky but one may as well just walk around with a caffeine IV drip before putting that big of a dose on your tongue. Thanks for the info. I will monitor the products reputation on the market. Would you try it?
ReplyDeleteYour blog is so relevant to my life. I consume caffeine everyday, but I always try to limit my intake. Unlike your article, I actually get a headache if I don’t have caffeine rather than getting a headache from the actual caffeine itself. I think it is crazy that people have begun to actually inhale caffeine. I think that if more people become educated on the harmfulness of this, hopefully people will think twice before using this legal drug in a powder form. I really liked your blog post! It was very informative and gave me insight on what is going on.
ReplyDeleteThis topic is definitely interesting especially with the fact that I consume caffeine almost everyday. I consume caffeine because I need it to keep me up in the morning and also it's my form of breakfast. I am aware that it's not a good form of breakfast but it's something that is quick to make and purchase sometime. I did not know about this dietary supplement called "breathable energy". The world is evolving everyday that new products are forming constantly. It'd be interesting to find out whether or not thei particular product is really useful for consumers. Often users are not quite educated on the products that they consume. Sometimes they assume that the product is out and it is good for you because it is being sold. Thank you for the useful information.
ReplyDeleteThis is so crazy, and I am definitely one of those guilty caffeine addicts. I only tend to drink caffeine when I have multiple assignments due for school, which let’s face it, is almost every day. I can always tell when I drink too much caffeine because my stomach starts to hurt and I feel very nauseous. I never connected anxiety with caffeine before. I tend to get very anxious all the time with school and work so maybe I will have to try cutting back the caffeine to see if there is a difference. I also thought it was very interesting that we no longer need to even drink the caffeine.
