An easy fix to weight loss? Is
there such a thing? Do you ever go a full day without thinking about every bite
of what you put in your mouth? Are you obsessed with food? When I was surfing
the web the other day, yahoo popped up. Yahoo news is my home page, so I always
look at news headlines. I am interested in health, so I usually browse health
headlines first. Like most of the general population, weight loss is always a
subject that catches my eye. I found it very surprising that just about a week
ago, the FDA approved a new weight loss drug called Qnexa. What is Qnexa? Qnexa
is a combination of two drugs. It is a combination of Phenteramine and Topiramate.
These medications are an antipsychotic, and an anti seizure and migraine
medicine put together. The Topiramate also cause a sensation of fullness. Before
prescribing this medication, physicians will still have to receive special
training, and the patient will have to be a certain percentage overweight. Personally,
I do not think this is the right way to lose weight, however I did find it
interesting that the FDA approved this medication. I even consulted a doctor I
work with about this new weight loss medication. He also had concerns about
this drug, however believes it can help some of the obese population. There
will still be much more studies done on this drug. The physician I consulted
with also told me he believes diet and exercise will always be the best method
of weight loss.
I found this article to be very interesting. It’s crazy to think that the FDA actually approved a drug like “Qnexa.” It’s horrifying to know that a combination of Phenteramine and Topiramate, which is an antipsychotic, anti-seizure, and migraine medicine can help aid weight loss. It’d be interesting to see the science backed up behind this new weight loss medicine. I, personally, do not get sucked into the weight loss pill market because in my opinion, they cannot be healthy for your mind and body. How can an antipsychotic, anti-seizure, and migraine medicine potentially aid in weight loss without any serious side effects? I am curious to see a copy of this article you came across. I think that as a society we are interesting in the “easy, fast way to lose weight.” In other words, our society is basically getting lazy. Whatever happened to the simple idea of eating balanced meals along with daily exercise? It seems that over the last few decades we have cheated the system. But we all know that cheating is bad, so what is the potential harm of these weight loss pills like Qnexa? I’m curious to know how these diet pills affect one over an extended period of time.
ReplyDeleteThis was quite an ineresting read. It is interesting that so many different drugs are being approved for the market althought it's not quite sure whether or not these drugs will be useful for consumers. This drug "Qnexa" that was approved by the FDA is quite interesting. This particular drug is an antipsychotic, anti-seizure, and migraine medicine that assists in weight loss. Sometimes I think more scientific evidence needs to be done when it comes to drugs like this. Althought pills might be an easier way to lose weight, I think society needs to be more aware that things aren't always easy. We have to learn that we must go the safer route and lose weight by working on our diet and exercising. Ultimately, although we're trying to lessen the risk of heart disease by controling our hunger, we're at the same time risking ourselves for other health related diseases.
ReplyDeleteI like your article. You have a nice literary voice. I am sometimes baffled by weightloss drugs. I always thought that it was the easy way out. It turns out that of all the weightloss drugs ever approved by the FDA I think Avandia is the only one still on the market, and it's use is controversial. I think the other reason some people might want a diet pill is insurance. I think they want a guarantee that they will lose weight. They may be wiling to try diets and exercise but they don't want to have to face failure. The fact is most people who use will use this drug will have probably tried diet and exercise but either couldn't keep the weight off or couldn't lose any in the first place. It really does take a lot of courage to lose weight.
