Lose It! is a fun and easy app to track your calories and exercise for the day or week. Start by setting up your current weight, goal weight, height and age. Like magic, your recommended daily calorie consumption is before your eyes. You’ve set a goal and you’re on your way to living a healthier life. Add in your food choices throughout the day by scanning bar codes, searching restaurant foods or brand names. Once you’ve done this a few times it will remember your previous choices under “My Foods.” (This is a super convenient option since most of us are creatures of habit when it comes to our food choices.) Log your activities and watch your available calories go up – pretty fun stuff! Seeing how your choices influence your health is very empowering. Even with the not so great decisions we all make, like pizza for breakfast, this app helps you get back on track.
Another app I like to use is Fooducate (chosen as a best health and fitness app by Apple for 2011). It is like having a dietician with you at all times. Just scan the barcode on the food label and you get instant feedback on the nutritional contents. The info is presented in an easy, fun format with grading scale and fun facts. After finding out my favorite granola bar had a lot more sugar hidden in it than I realized, Fooducate gave me some better alternatives. After scanning just about everything in my pantry and getting over my initial shock of finding out that some of my so-called “healthy” choices were not what they made themselves out to be, I moved on with new nutritional insight and confidence in my future shopping trips. Also, a fun option on this app is the “shake phone for random product.” Just a little entertainment nutrition junkies will enjoy- check it out!
I LOVE this post! I actually work at the Apple store here and I am always having people ask me what some of the best apps are for their iPhones. I can't wait to let them know about Fooducate. I actually downloaded it myself today and I am already enjoying the information it tells me. Thank you so much for posting about this!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I really like how the LoseIt! app is a healthier alternative to WeightWatchers. I think that people on that program can be confused about what it means to lose weight and to lose weight and be healthy. I think this app is a MUCH better way to stay healthy and lose weight.
I think this is such great information to share! With all the smart phones and apps available why not have one to help you stay health? My boss was just sharing with me about using the Lose It! App. She says it is nice because it sends her notifications three times a day to enter the foods she eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner. These reminders help her to log in her daily calories so she can track her total calories daily and make adjustments when needed. The ability to scan the barcode leaves little room for excuses for not knowing the calorie content of the food you consume or are about to consume. A calculator is not needed to calculate your daily intake because it’s all completed for you by the app.
ReplyDeleteI ran into your blog post today, and it was really cool, because I made a very similar post on my NTR 494 blog earlier this month. I just loved that some of our words were even somewhat similar. Anyways I like how in detail your post was on the apps you posted on. I have been using my Fitness Pal for a while now and Lose it kind of reminds me of my fitness pal.
